The Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker has bagged the Best Picture and five other prizes at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, its haul including best director for Kathryn Bigelow.
Bigelow is the first woman in the 82-year history of the Oscars to earn Hollywood's top prize for filmmakers.

Iraq war movie "The Hurt Locker," took the Oscars by storm on Sunday winning six of the major film honours, including best movie and director for Kathryn Bigelow who became the first woman to win that honour.

The drama about a squad of bomb defusing specialists and the emotional toll war takes on them also secured writer Mark Boal the Academy Award for best original screenplay, and claimed honours for film editing, sound editing and mixing.

"Hurt Locker" and Bigelow won Oscars over stiff competition from her ex-husband James Cameron, whose sci-fi adventure "Avatar" is the top-grossing movie ever with USD 2.5 billion at box offices and was seen as a favourite for best movie.

"This really is, there's no other way to describe it, it's the moment of a lifetime," Bigelow said.

"Avatar" earned 3 Oscars, but in technical categories -- visual effects, cinematography and art direction.

Veteran Jeff Bridges claimed best actor playing a drunken country singer in drama "Crazy Heart." The son of Hollywood star Lloyd Bridges, held his trophy high over his head, looking to the heavens and thanking his deceased parents.

"Mom and Dad, yeah," he shouted. "Thank you Mom and Dad for turning me on to such a groovy profession."

Sandra Bullock was named best actress for "The Blind Side" in a first for the actress once dubbed "America's Sweetheart" because she won so many early fans in her romantic comedies.

But for "The Blind Side," she took the part of a real-life, strong-willed mother who helps take a homeless youth off the street and makes him into a football success.

"Did I really earn this, or did I just wear you all down?" she joked on Oscar's stage.

Dark drama "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" earned two Oscars including supporting actress for Mo'Nique and adapted screenplay for writer Geoffrey Fletcher, who became the first African American to claim that honour.

Christoph Waltzwon best supporting actor for his turn as a menacing Nazi officer in revenge fantasy "Inglourious Basterds," which follows a band of American Jews killing their enemies behind lines during World War Two.

"Up" was named best animated movie, and Argentina's "The Secret in Their Eyes" won best foreign language film.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan says he has chosen to remain tight-lipped over Indian Premier League (IPL) issue because he fears his statement could be misinterpreted.
'They (the media) ask all the same questions on the film ('Rann') and the media and the angst among them. And then the real reason they are their - 'What sir are your takes on this IPL and Pakistan and Balasaheb and Shah Rukh events?',' Amitabh posted on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com Sunday from his Pratkeesha residence in Mumbai.
Shiv Sena activists demonstrated in front of superstar Shah Rukh's house in Bandra here Sunday to protest his comments favouring inclusion of Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League (IPL). They dubbed him a traitor and have demanded that he apologise.
'These are sensitive issues and I must remain out of it. Who and which channel shall distort, amend, cut paste, slow motion, back ground music my comment, one does not know. And also one does not know what stance the channel shall take on it. So, it is best to not comment at all,' he added.
Shah Rukh is the co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders IPL team.

So, here is the question; Who has the credit for this? The posters? The media? The Fox entertimenent? No.. The real marketing hero is Bal Takerey and his Shiv Sena.

Moviegoers in Mumbai filled cinema halls to see My Name is Khan, starring Bollywood leading man Shah Rukh Khan, ignoring protests and the threat of violence from a right-wing political party opposed to the film star.

At an Inox Leisure Ltd. multiplex in Mumbai’s Nariman Point business district police at a checkpoint frisked moviegoers before allowing them in. Mumbai multiplexes decided Friday afternoon, after an assurance of safety from local police, to open bookings for the film.

“I wasn’t scared,” said Rasika Jain, a 19-year-old college student, who came with her family to watch the film. “I would have been angrier if I was forced to miss his movie.”

Khan is involved in a dispute with Mumbai’s Shiv Sena, a political party, that’s targeted the Muslim actor since he publicly regretted the absence of players from Islamic Pakistan in the Indian Premier League, the world’s richest cricket competition, which starts March 12. Khan owns the Kolkata Knight Riders, an IPL team, which did not bid for any Pakistani players.

“This is not for political points,” said Subhash Desai, a Shiv Sena spokesman, by telephone from Mumbai. “Khan wants players from the same country that sent people to murder hundreds of Indians. He must apologize.”

A terrorist attack in November 2008 on Mumbai, India’s financial capital, left 166 people dead. India blamed terrorist “elements” from Pakistan for the attack. Pakistan acknowledged last February that its territory was used to plot the attack.

Shivaji’s Army

Supporters of the Shiv Sena, or Shivaji’s Army, damaged movie screens and stoned buses in Mumbai earlier this week. They scuffled with police at a few movie halls in the city today, said Deven Bharti, a Mumbai police spokesman.

“If there is any violence, the police are here to handle it,” he said, adding the government had arrested over 2,000 people to prevent disruptions.

Karuna Badwal, Khan’s executive assistant at his company Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt., hung up when called for comment.

The militant Shiv Sena’s campaigns against migrants from poorer northern states and in favor of majority Hindus are often violent. The party is named after a 17th-century local hero called Shivaji who formed a Hindu kingdom and fought off attacks by Muslim rulers.

The Sena was formed by a former cartoonist in 1966 and its partners ruled the state of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital, for one term from 1995. It has lost the last two assembly elections to an alliance led by the Congress Party.

In the movie, co-produced by News Corp.’s Fox Star Studios and marketed internationally by Fox Searchlight Pictures, Khan plays an Indian Muslim with Asperger’s Syndrome living in the U.S. whose life changes after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Khan, whose house in Mumbai is being guarded by police while he is overseas, turned to Twitter Inc.’s social networking service to send messages to his fans, which were repeated all day on television news channels.

SRK fans across India proved that they are in support of bollywood, and gave a huge blow to antinationals such as Shiv Sena and VHP.

After much negotiation and a meeting on Friday morning, multiplexes in Mumbai have decided they will have limited screenings of Shah Rukh Khan's
new film, My Name is Khan. Most single-screen cinemas, however, have ruled against the film for security reasons. (Watch: Bollywood for SRK)
Here's how other cities across India greeted the film:
Delhi: Shiv Sainiks attacked the Satyam cinema hall in Janakpuri in Thursday night. Some hoardings of Shah Rukh Khan were burnt at Nizamuddin also last night. Bookings for the film, though, have been good in Delhi and it released per schedule.

Kolkata, Bangalore: In cities like Kolkata and Bangalore, fans have ensured packed shows, stressing that they want to support Shah Rukh Khan for having the courage of his convictions, and for refusing to apologize to the Shiv Sena. (Watch)
Ahmedabad: In Ahmedabad, there was a brief scare after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad threatened to attack cinemas showing the film. The first show at all theatres was cancelled, but after reassurances by the state government, the second show rolled out on schedule.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists on Friday tore down the posters of Shah Rukh Khan starrer My Name is Khan and caused ruckus in a bid to halt the release of the film in Ahmedabad and Jamnagar in Gujarat.
The VHP on Wednesday had backed the Shiv Sena's [ Images ] protest against Shah Rukh Khan, saying there was 'nothing wrong' in it as the country is not prepared to tolerate a 'Pakistani sympathiser.'
"Multiplexes have decided not to screen the film for the first couple of shows, which have been cancelled. But if the situation improves, they will be screening the film later," Multiplexes Owners' Association (MOA) President Ashok Purohit told PTI.
VHP international general secretary Praveen Togadia, however, opposed Sena's 'Mumbai for Marathis' campaign.

The Disision of Bravery
Meanwhile, some multiplex owners in Mumbai have decided to screen the film, post noon. However, several single screens have decided against the release till the issue is resolved between the Sena and the actor.
Over 1,800 Sena activists, including functionaries, have been arrested in the last three days to thwart protests by the Sena, which is demanding an apology from Shah Rukh for his remarks favouring Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League [ Images ] 3.
MNIK got a smooth release in Delhi [ Images ], amid beefed-up security.
Isolated cases of protest against the film's screening were, however, reported last night when five persons claimed to be Shiv Sainiks tore posters of the film and damaged window panes of Satyam [ Get Quote ] cinema hall in west Delhi. They have been detained by the police.

"Policemen are deployed near the theatres in adequate numbers to avoid any violence. We are keeping close watch," a senior police official said.
The film, which is banking on the chemistry of Shah Rukh and Kajol [ Images ], recieved a good response in Delhi theatres. "Morning shows have 85 percent occupancy but the post noon shows are all sold out. Our theatres are booked till Sunday," Jayendra Banerjee, Vice President Satyam Cineplexes told PTI.
"Some 75 screens in Delhi are screening the movie. The film has also benefited from the Shivratri holiday today. On an average, multiplexes are running 11 to 12 shows a day," a distributor said.
Meanwhile, a sell-out crowd greeted MNIK in West Bengal [ Images ], which released in 131 cinema halls across the state without any trouble.
Police sources said that there was no untoward incident in any cinema hall or multiplex when the film released.
"The only crowd we can see is that of cine-goers. There has been no protest of any sort," an officer of Kolkata [ Images ] Police said. "Security arrangements have, however, been beefed up at the halls and multiplexes in view of the controversy."
A multiplex in Nagpur screened the morning show of MNIK amid tight security arrangements. However, uncertainty prevailed over the film's screening in most single screen theatres, as they refunded the tickets of the noon show.
Cine exhibitors and distributors met up this morning to discuss the situation. Heavy police was deployed in all the theatres where the film was slated to be screened.

The countdown has begun. There are just three days (13th February 2010) left for the release of Bollywood’s most-hyped flick, filmmaker Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan,and the uproar is deafening.
The ongoing row between Shah Ruk Khan and the Thackerays notwithstanding, it is not only in India that movie buffs are awaiting the February 12 release of Sha Rukh Khan's
Over 1600 Shiv Sena (Siva Sena) activists were today arrested ahead of the release of Shah Rukh ( Sharukh Khan ) Khan starrer 'My Name Is Khan' as the Maharashtra government beefed up security enabling theatre owners to re-open advance bookings.

The latest poll by the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), which calls itself `the biggest, best, most award-winning movie site on the planet,' shows that MNIK is among the 12 releases this month that filmgoers in Hollywood are looking forward to.
Some of cinema halls in the city had suspended advance bookings after Sena activists targeted them. But they decided to restart bookings after the Maharashtra government increased security and issued fresh guidelines.
"So far, 1600 have been arrested approximately...Many of them have been remanded to judicial custody up to February 12 and some to police custody up to February 15," Joint Commissioner of Police Himanshu Roy told reporters here.
The Sena activists, including office bearers, were charged with rioting, damaging property, unlawful assembly and trespassing, police said. Police also picked up some from near Broadway cinema at suburban Borivali.
The Sena is demanding that Khan apologise for supporting inclusion of Pakistani cricketers in the upcoming IPL but the actor has refused to do so, saying his comments were not anti-national and there is nothing to retract.
Under the new guidelines to the theatre owners, the first three rows will be kept empty to prevent miscreants from damaging the screens.
"Also, we are thinking of deploying some cameras in select theatres and police men in uniform as well as plain clothes will be present in and outside the cinema halls," Roy said, adding many of the theatre owners have started the advance booking of the film.
The Scorsese-DiCaprio reunion movie, Shutter Island emerged as the most-awaited movie with 47.8 per cent of the votes polled. The classic horror remake, The Wolfman polled 16.6 per cent votes while the Kevin Smith action-comedy, Cop Out garnered 6.9 per cent.
MNIK is there at the 11th place, polling 0.8 per cent votes.

The much awaited Shah Rukh Khan Kajol starrer film ‘My Name Is Khan’ (MNIK) will be global release in theaters on 12 February 2010, and will show in a premiere at the 60th annual Berlin International Film Festival, according to an official list announced here today.

The film begins with the child, Rizwan Khan (Tanay Chheda), a Muslim who has Asperger syndrome, growing up with his mother (Zarina Wahab) in the Borivali section of Mumbai. Later as an adult (Shahrukh Khan), Rizwan moves to San Francisco and lives with his brother and sister-in-law. While there, he falls in love with Mandira (Kajol). They eventually marry and begin a business.

After the events of 9/11, Rizwan and Mandira begin to face a number of difficulties. Following a tragedy, they separate. In order to win her back, Rizwan embarks on a long journey across the United States.

My Name Is Khan will have a star-studded screening at one of the oldest film festivals in the world starting February 11-21.

Organisers presented the official list of 26 films for the festival today, out of which 20 will be competing for the top prize, Golden Bear award. However, the Karan Johar directed film is not in the competition section.

The festival will host premieres from top Hollywood filmmakers like Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer.

My Name Is Khan is set to be released in theatres in India and over 40 countries including the US, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East on February 12.

The film will see the most sought after Bollywood pair, Shah Rukh and Kajol, re-unite after 8 years.

The story is of Rizvan Khan, an unconventional hero, who embarks on an incredible journey across America in order to win back the love of his life. Along the way his unique brand of goodness and humanity touches the lives of many and inspires a nation.

Whether Shiv Sena will be able to restrict cine-goers to watch ‘My Name Is Khan’? With Shiv Sena’s moral brigade protesting against Shahrukh Khan for his comments over involving Pakistani cricketers in the Indian Premier League, Sena’s threat of burning down cinema houses screening ‘My Name Is Khan’ is looming over everyone’s mind. Actor-director Farhan Akhtar though, has a solution to put an end to the controversy.

Farhan exclaims, “The best way one can do to show support for MNIK and cock a snook at the madness is go and watch it fearlessly. There is no need for anyone to be afraid in face of this sort of hooliganism. There are laws that can protect us.”

“Nothing and nobody has the right to disrupt the release of MNIK. I am with Karan, SRK and Kajol all the way,” signs off Farhan Akhtar.

There is a threat for SRK by some extremist organization in Mumbai, prior to the relies of My Name is Khan.

Indian Political party BJP leader Shaina N.C., along with representatives of Fox Star Studios, today met the State police chief seeking protection for actor Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film ‘My Name is Khan’, in the backdrop of Shiv Sena’s threat to disrupt its screening.

Fox Star Studios is the distributor of the movie, scheduled to be released on February 12.

Director General of Police A.N. Roy has assured complete security to the screening of the movie at all theatres across the State.

“He (Roy) said full protection would be given to theatres and there would not be any disruption during the movie’s screening at any theatre in the State,” Fox Star Studios India CEO, Vijay Singh said.

Ms. Shaina, who accompanied the team, said director Karan Johan and Shah Rukh were her good friends, and she came here in their support.

“If there are any issues, they can be sorted out through a dialogue. Violence can not be a solution,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Roy was unavailable for comment.

Shiv Sena has came down heavily on Shah Rukh Khan, the co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, an IPL franchise, after he favoured the inclusion of Pakistani cricketers for the tournament’s third season.

Angered over his comments, Sena has threatened theatre owners to stall the movie’s screening and demanded an apology from him.

Indian Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan said he felt angry and humiliated after he was detained and questioned at a US airport, sparking an uproar in India among his fans.
Khan, 43, one of India's best known actors, was enroute to Chicago for a parade to mark the Indian Independence Day on Saturday when he was pulled aside at Newark airport on Friday, he said.
"I was really hassled perhaps because of my name being Khan.
"These guys just wouldn't let me through," he said in a text message to reporters in India.
After a couple of hours' interrogation, he was allowed to make a call, he said, and he got in touch with the Indian consulate who vouched for him and secured his release.
"Absolutely uncalled for, I think. I felt angry and humiliated," said Khan, who had just finished a month-long shoot in the United States for his upcoming film My Name is Khan, which is about a Muslim man's experience with racial profiling. Khan "is a Muslim name and I think the name is common on their checklist," the actor told an Indian television channel by telephone from Chicago.
"I was waiting for my bags... I thought it was nice of them to take me to another room... but that was apparently a second check," Shah Rukh said, adding, "I had my papers in order."

A US consul official in India told a TV channel they were inquiring into the matter.
As news of Shah Rukh's detention broke on Indian television channels, fans and actors began posting angry comments on the Internet. "Shocking, disturbing and downright disgraceful. It's such behaviour that fuels hatred and racism. SRK's a world figure for God's sake. Get real!!", tweeted actor Priyanka Chopra.
Indian Information Minister Ambika Soni told a TV channel that while she could not say if Shah Rukh had been detained "on religious grounds, there have been too many instances like these in the US concerning Indians".
Soni said frisking in the US was often done "beyond permissible limits".
"I don't understand how in the name of religion, frisking can be done for anyone like this," Soni later said.
Last month US-based carrier Continental Airlines apologised to former Indian president A.P.J. Post 9/11 it is prejudice to have a person's name and religion checked and it is very discouraging as well.
Pritish Nandy: This is the problem with law enforcers worldwide...Truly obnoxious. Cops don't want to recognise anybody. They love to show their power and authority, especially in the US.

The much-hyped finale of Rakhi Sawant's 'swayamvar' on NDTV Imagine gave the channel its highest Television Rating Points (TRPs) ever since its launch in January 2008.
The final episode of the show Rakhi Ka Swayamwar, which saw the item girl announcing Toronto-based businessman Elesh Parujanwala as her ideal groom, registered a TRP of 6.3 Sunday night. According to overnight audience measurement agency aMap, it has been the highest TRPs so far for the channel.
The finale came after over a month of putting 16 men to test their compatibility with the bride-to-be.
Three final contestants -- including Delhi-based Manas Katyal and Chhitiz Jain, apart from Elesh -- had come with their families for the swayamvar at the grand event held at The Leela Kempinsky hotel here.
The show was a success since beginning as even its pioneer episode, which aired June 29, recorded a 3.5 TRP - the highest ratings among all the previous launches of NDTV Imagine.
From Elesh Parujanwala’s Side
Instead of hosting a grand party following his win on Rakhi Ka Swayamvar, 30-year-old Elesh Parujanwala is busy arranging a Canadian visa for his fiancee Rakhi Sawant, so that they can attend his sister's wedding together in Toronto.
"I'm heading back to Toronto soon. As of now, I am busy trying to arrange a visa for Rakhi. My sister is getting married on August 16 and it would be really great if both of us would be there. It would be like twin celebration for my family," said Elesh, who was the only NRI contestant on the 'swayamvar'.
Last year Elesh set up an acting academy with his business partner in Kandivali, Mumbai. But soon Rakhi Ka Swayamvar came up and he decided to "probe into the real Rakhi Sawant" through the show.
"Nothing was planned about coming on the show. I guess, I happened to be at the right place at the right time -- that's all. Everyone had an opinion about her and I wanted to find out who she really is," said Elesh, a Gujarati settled in Toronto.
So what did he find out? "Rakhi aces all the categories that I ever wanted in my woman. She is simply genuine and I love that about her. When I saw her first, she looked stunning and gorgeous," he said.
Elesh, who was among 16 aspirants who came to court Rakhi on NDTV Imagine's reality show, says it feels "amazing" to have been chosen as the "ideal groom". But he wants to wait before he ties the nuptial knot with Rakhi.
"We have decided to spend sometime together off the camera and know each other better. We have gotten engaged as of now, but there's still time before we get married," he said.
And before the bride and groom do that, they need to brush up their English and Hindi language skills respectively. While Elesh manages to speak broken Hindi and a bit of Gujarati, Rakhi doesn't have a good grip on English.
Won't communicating be a problem? "I can understand a bit of Hindi. And I mix up the vocabulary a bit, besides stumbling upon certain words, I'll get a hang of it soon. As far as Rakhi is concerned, I can help her with her English -- she can help me with Hindi -- and it would be a team effort. Together, I think we would make a good 'Team Toronto'," he quipped.

She may be only nine years old, but Slumdog Millionaire actress Rubina Ali has made history by becoming the youngest person to 'write' an autobiography.
In her new book Slumgirl Dreaming: Journey to the Stars, the child star gives an insight from her rise from the slums of Mumbai to Hollywood fame and back again.
She also gives her opinion on 'strange' Nicole Kidman, who she starred alongside in a soft drinks advertisement.

In the 192 page book written by journalist Divya Dugar, who spent the past six months following Rubina, only 24 pages feature her pre-Slumdog life.
As well talking about making the multi Oscar-winning film and the recent demolition of her home in the Mumbai slums, Rubina also discusses her more recent acting job.
Rubina was reportedly paid more than her Slumdog salary for three days work on a French Schweppes advert, which she filmed on location in India with Nicole.
Rubina played a small child enchanted with Nicole's Indian princess character in the bizarre ad's confusing plotline.
Despite sharing a trailer together, Rubina admitted she didn't get to know the Australian actress very well.
In the book, she said: 'I really liked her, but she was very quiet and didn't speak much.
'I think she was a bit shy.'
She goes on to describe the actress as 'strange' because she refused to come out of her trailer over the whole shoot, seemingly afraid of the sun on her alabaster complexion.
Rubina was discovered by director Danny Boyle when he auditioned hundreds of children from the Mumbai slums last year and cast her as the younger version of Freida Pinto's character Latika.
In the book, Rubina admitted the success of the film hasn't changed her life so much, because she returned to the slums again after attending the Oscars in Hollywood March.
But she admits she now has higher standards of hygiene and will walk a long.

The book's writer Divya said: 'She knows a lot more about the world beyond the slum. She has seen what life is like for the rich.
'She has seen the other side of the picture and knows now that life can be better.'
Rubina's father Rafiq also vehemently denies reports he tried to cash in on his daughter's movie fame by offering to 'sell' her for £200,000.
Divya added: 'She has a blind faith in her family, she thinks they couldn't have done anything to harm her.'
Rubina is now living at an uncle's house after her shanty home was demolished by Indian authorities in May.
The youngster admitted she doesn't known where her Slumdog salary has gone, but a lot of it is believed to have funded her father's medical treatment for a broken ankle.
She said: 'I'm not sure I got all of it, or where it has all gone.'
Thanks to a trust set up by Boyle and the Slumdog producers, Rubina and co-star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail are attending school and are having homes built for them.

Oscar winning music director AR Rahman of Slumdog Millionaire fame, his Sri Lankan co-performer MIA of the hit O Saya song and Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani have made it to the Time's 100 list of the World's Most Influential People.
The new list to be published in the May 11 annual Time 100 issue is the pick of the magazine's editors and may not be confused with the popular choice in TIME.com's online poll that "just happened to be" won on Monday by "moot - the mysterious 21-year-old creator of the influential Web message board 4chan.or".
"In our annual TIME 100 issue, we do the impossible: name the people who most affect our world," said the editors as they relegated moot to the 35th position and instead chose ailing Democratic senator Edward Kennedy for the top spot.
British premier Gordon Brown makes it to the second spot, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in the eighth place, Pakistan army chief Ashfaq Kayani is sitting pretty at the 19th position, just a spot ahead of President Barack Obama.

In India, a country of a billion inhabitants, where film and pop music are one, A.R. Rahman, 43, dominates the music industry so totally that he has supplied the sound track for a whole generation.
