With every Washington area high school league, district or conference postponing games Friday -- and likely through the weekend -- a big question for area coaches and administrators looms: When will they be able to play?
The storm's timing on the winter sports calendar could have playoff implications for basketball, and already is impacting other sports such as wrestling, swimming, indoor track and hockey.
Washington Snow Strom Update, a strong snow storm has hit the mid-Atlantic area of U.S on Saturday, 6th of February 2010. Washington snow storm was about 10 inches that is 25 cm by 1 a.m. EST in Washington, D.C.
Local weather forecasters stated that the storm could even bring the heaviest snowfall in 90 years to the Washington area. Washington dc weather is critical and snowfall of 20 to 30 inches is forecast from Virginia to southern New Jersey by Saturday evening when the storm is expected to move out to sea.
Strong winds caused storm conditions, particularly along the mid-Atlantic coast, with speeds of about 40 mph (64 kph). Most flights were canceled on Saturday at the Washington-Baltimore area’s three main airports and at Philadelphia International Airport. Driving in the region was treacherous and authorities advised motorists to stay off the roads. Washington’s Metro train service will operate only underground on Saturday and bus service has been canceled.
Further complicating things is another potential snowstorm predicted to hit the area Tuesday. The overwhelming majority of the area already had to postpone games last Tuesday because of snow, and many of those games have not yet been made up.
"Usually we just play [postponed games] on the next available play date," said Chris Lun, Whitman's boys' basketball coach and the Maryland 4A West Region director, "but now since they say there may be more snow next week, I don't know when that's going to be."
In Virginia, district basketball tournaments are scheduled to begin Feb. 16, with teams still needing to play three or four more regular season games before then. In Maryland, the region tournament draw will be held on Feb. 21, and, even though the playoffs don't begin for another five days, any games played after the draw does not affect seeding.
